Adventure Travel for Disabled - Nothing Can Stop You Anymore

According to the 2000 census there are approximately 50 million Americans with disabilities. A disabled travel guide is just as likely to offer adventure travel destinations as any other travel literature. The disabled travel insurance may be a little higher but there is no reason why one-sixth of he American population should be denied the exciting experiences this world has to offer. Travel tours for disabled individuals may require different planning and different equipment but they are out there ready for the booking.

Can Disabled People Go on Adventure Travel Excursions?

With the development of better assistive devices and a growing acceptance of disabled individuals as "mainstream" rather than marginalized members of society, more and more disabled adventure travel packages and offers for international travel for disabled people are available. These opportunities are being developed by companies willing to go the extra mile for their clients and to seemingly make the impossible possible.

Choosing A Destination

Selecting a destination is an important aspect of any trip but is especially critical in the case of disabled individuals. On some trips disabled individuals will most likely need to travel with a friend who is willing to help them with the hard physical aspects of access to remote and often rugged locations. Most travel companies use buses or travel trailers for the disabled that have the necessary lifts and ramps but there are times when only human strength and cooperation will get someone in a wheelchair where they want to go. The disabled traveler should always understand exactly how far the tour company is willing to go in that regard and then make the decision if they can travel alone or if they need the help of an able-bodied friend.

One of the most popular destination tours for disabled people is Africa, and the continent is often the first listed option in a disabled travel guide. The opportunity to participate in a safari is not only an attractive option but because wild animal viewing must be done from the safety of trucks and land rovers, disabled individuals can be more easily accommodated.

New Zealand and Australia are also popular destinations because they offer vast vistas of unspoiled land but also have urban amenities and offer access to better facilities for handicapped access. This is not to say, however, that a disabled person is in any way barred from visiting the Amazon rainforest or the ruins of Macchu Picchu in Peru. Such excursions are all about the logistics and any determined person can work out the logistics.

In the US there are plenty of options for the disabled traveler who wishes to enjoy an adventure during his vacations. By law all national parks must be handicapped accessible. Many parks can be fully enjoyed on driving tours and all feature some level of wheelchair accessible trails and campsites. Consider starting with Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, the Arizona-Sonora Desert or the Badlands National Park.
